Disposable Vape Not Working? Work Through These Checks in Order
A disposable vape not working is one of the most common problems people bring to us, and most of the time the device is fine. It is blocked, it is cold, it is being drawn on too gently, or it has hit a protection cut-off that resets itself in seconds.
This guide runs the checks in order of how often they turn out to be the answer, not in the order they occur to you at the time. Work down the list and you will fix most devices before reaching the section on genuine faults — and if you get to the end without success, you will know exactly what to tell us so we can replace it without a back-and-forth.
Adult use only. This guide is written for adults of legal vaping age in Australia. We make no health claims about vaping products, and nothing here is medical advice. If you do not currently use nicotine products, we do not recommend starting. If you have questions about nicotine use, consult a healthcare professional.
First: what kind of not working is it?
Three different problems get described the same way, and they have entirely different causes:
- Nothing at all — no light, no vapour, no sound. Jump to the battery and connection checks.
- The light comes on but there is little or no vapour. This is the most common case by a distance, and it is almost always airflow or temperature. Start at check 1.
- It works but tastes burnt. Different problem entirely — see the burnt taste section below.
Check 1: The mouthpiece is blocked
The single most common cause, and the quickest to fix.
Condensed e-liquid collects in the mouthpiece channel, particularly in a device carried in a pocket or bag. Enough of it and you get a partial or complete blockage: the light fires, the coil heats, and the vapour has nowhere to go.
The fix: roll up a corner of paper towel, push it gently into the mouthpiece, and twist. If it comes out damp, that was your problem. Blowing sharply through the mouthpiece from the outside also clears it, and can be done anywhere.
Do not poke anything hard or metal down the channel. There is a wick and a coil at the bottom of it and both are easy to damage permanently.
Check 2: You are drawing too gently — or too hard
Disposables fire on a pressure-sensitive airflow sensor, and it has a threshold at both ends.
- Too gentle and the sensor never triggers. Common when someone moves across from a button-activated device, or when a device sits in a bag for a fortnight and the first draw is tentative.
- Too hard and you can pull air past the sensor faster than it registers, or flood the coil with more e-liquid than it can vaporise. Both produce a weak draw, and the second one leaves you with liquid in your mouth.
The fix: a slow, steady draw of two to three seconds, roughly the effort of drawing through a thick milkshake straw. If a hard pull gives you nothing and a gentle one works, the sensor is fine and your technique was the variable.
Check 3: The device is cold
Underrated, and seasonal. E-liquid thickens as it cools, and below about 10°C it can become viscous enough that the wick stops feeding the coil properly. A device left in a car overnight, or carried in an outside jacket pocket through a Melbourne winter morning, will often produce almost nothing.
The fix: hold it in a closed hand or an inside pocket for five to ten minutes, then try again with a slow draw. Do not apply direct heat — no hot water, no heater vent, and definitely nothing that warms the cell.
Check 4: Air vents are covered
Every disposable has intake vents, usually small holes near the base or along one edge. Cover them with a finger and airflow drops to nothing, which the sensor reads as no draw at all.
The fix: look for the vents, then check how you hold the device. This is a surprisingly common cause among people who have just switched to a differently shaped model and are holding it the way the old one sat in their hand.
Check 5: The cut-off timer has tripped
Every device has a maximum continuous firing time, typically eight to twelve seconds, after which it shuts off automatically. It is a safety feature, and it is doing its job.
Symptom: the device stops mid-draw, often with a few blinks, then works again after a pause.
The fix: shorter draws. If you are consistently hitting the cut-off, you are drawing for longer than the device is designed for and getting a hotter, harsher vapour as a result.
Check 6: Charge, on rechargeable devices
Larger-capacity devices are rechargeable, which means they can also be flat. The longer-running devices in our range — the 12,000-puff models and the 25,000-puff CRWN Infinity — will not deliver their rated life on a single charge, by design.
The fix: connect it and give it 15 to 30 minutes, then try again. Points worth checking:
- Use a known-good cable. Cheap cables that carry power but have degraded data or ground lines cause charging problems that look like a dead device. Test with a cable you know works.
- Use a low-power source. A computer USB port or a phone charger is ideal. Fast chargers can push more current than a small cell is designed to accept.
- Check the port for lint. Pocket fluff compacts into a charging port and prevents the plug from seating. A wooden toothpick clears it — carefully, with the device disconnected.
- Watch the light. Most devices show a charging indicator. If nothing lights up on a cable you have verified, that is a real fault.
Check 7: It has simply run out
Anticlimactic, but it happens more often than people expect, because the advertised puff count sets the expectation.
That number comes from a drawing machine under laboratory conditions — short, evenly spaced draws at a controlled volume — and real use looks nothing like it. Most people land well below the figure on the box, and that is a measurement standard rather than a defect. We go through the testing methodology in Vape Puff Count Explained.
How to tell: a device that is out of e-liquid usually tastes progressively worse before it stops, and on a non-rechargeable device the light may still work while the vapour has gone. If flavour faded over a day or two and then disappeared, it is finished.
Check 8: It is flooded
Symptoms: gurgling, liquid in your mouth, weak vapour, sometimes a spitting sound. Caused by drawing too hard, by heat, or by a device that has spent time on its side.
The fix: hold it mouthpiece-down over a tissue and flick your wrist gently a few times, then wipe the mouthpiece. Take two or three short primer draws without the device firing if it has an airflow you can partially block. It usually recovers within a minute.
Check 9: It fires by itself
A device that activates in your pocket needs to come out of it. Auto-firing is caused by a stuck sensor, moisture in the airflow path, or pressure on the device from other objects.
If it continues after the device has been out of your pocket and given a few minutes, stop using it and contact us. Continuous firing generates heat with nowhere for it to go, and this is a genuine fault rather than a technique problem.
If it tastes burnt
Burnt taste is a different failure from no vapour, and when it appears tells you the cause:
- Burnt from the first few puffs — a coil or wicking fault. This is a manufacturing defect and we will replace it. Record a short video and email us.
- Burnt after weeks of use, with the device nearly finished — normal. The wick is running dry as the e-liquid runs out. Nothing to fix.
- Burnt after chain vaping — the wick has not had time to re-saturate. Leave it 20 to 30 minutes and it usually recovers, though repeated dry hits can damage a coil permanently.
When it is a genuine fault
If you have worked through the list and the device still will not produce vapour, it is faulty and we will replace it. That is particularly clear when:
- There is no light at all on a device confirmed to have charge
- It gets hot rather than warm, especially when idle
- It leaks from the base rather than the mouthpiece
- It was burnt from the very first puffs
- It died far short of any reasonable fraction of its rating
What to send us: email orders@zealvape.com with your order number and a video of 10 to 20 seconds showing you drawing on the device with the indicator light visible. The video is what lets us approve a replacement immediately rather than exchanging messages about symptoms. Verified faults are replaced with postage covered — the conditions are on our Returns & Warranty page.
If the light is blinking rather than staying off, the pattern itself narrows down the cause — Why Is My Vape Blinking? decodes the common ones. And if the device also feels lighter than it should or performed poorly from the start, it is worth running through our authenticity checks, since counterfeit devices fail early far more often than genuine ones.
Making devices last longer
Most of the faults above are preventable:
- Keep it out of the heat. A car dashboard in an Australian summer will degrade e-liquid and stress the cell.
- Store it upright where you can, particularly overnight. Most flooding traces back to a device lying on its side.
- Draw slowly and pause between puffs. Chain vaping is the main cause of premature burnt taste.
- Charge on something modest. A computer port treats a small cell better than a fast charger.
- Do not blow into the mouthpiece. Blowing outwards clears a blockage; blowing inwards pushes condensate down onto the coil.
Look after a device this way and you will get closer to the upper end of what it can actually deliver — which, as ever, is a good deal less than the number printed on the box.
